Rejection of the Report on the Work of the Ombudsman for Children is an Attack on the Independence of the Institution

logo 1On 9 and 10 June 2016, the Members of the Croatian Parliament discussed the Work Report of the Ombudsman for Children for 2015, after opinions on the Report had been issued by the Government of the Republic of Croatia and by the Parliamentary Committee on the Family, Youth and Sports, which proposed that the Report be adopted. However, the said proposal was not accepted by the Croatian Parliament, as out of 129 Members of the Parliament, 56 voted in favour of the proposal, 64 voted against it and 9 abstained from the vote.

COPE Annual Conference in Zagreb

conference COPE malaOn the 20th May, COPE co-hosted its annual conference with the Ombudsman for Children Croatia, at the Old Town Hall, Zagreb, entitled "Children with a Parent in Conflict With the Law: What are their best interests? How can they be met?". Over 200 delegates attended the conference, which began with an introduction from the Ombudswoman for Children, Ivana Milas Klaric, and an opening address from COPE founding member and former president Alain Bouregba on what constitutes the best interests of the child and the need for the “tailor made” over a “one size fits all” approach.

The CRONSEE Meeting in Osijek: OP3 CRC and the Role of the Ombudsman

CRONSE Osijek2015The representatives of the Children's Rights Ombudspersons' Network in South and Eastern Europe (CRONSEE) and the organisation Save the Children International (SCI) held a Thematic Meeting on 28 october 2015 in Osijek to discuss and exchange ideas on the position and role of ombudsmen for children concerning the implementation of the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In addition to the Protocol, also discussed were the experiences and practice of the members of the CRONSEE network and the SCI regarding the current refugee crisis and its impact on the protection of the rights of refugee children.

The Annual CRONSEE Conference in Zagreb

djevojcica naprozoru tuznaThis year the Ombudsperson for Children of the Republic of Croatia is the work coordinator for the Children's Rights Ombudspersons' Network in South and Eastern Europe – CRONSEE. Acting as the network coordinator, the Ombudsperson for Children Ivana Milas Klarić organises the Annual CRONSEE Conference: The Rights of the Child – between the Interests of the Parents and the Obligations of the State. The Conference will be held in Zagreb, on 28 May 2015, at the Old City Hall (room A), St. Ćiril and Metod Street 5, starting at 10 a.m. The Conference is under the auspices of the City Assembly of the City of Zagreb.
